Summer of Fun Week 2+

5.27- 6.6.2020
SAW
Routes were planned, reservations had been made, and were it not for COVID-19, Thursday would have been our first day at Banff National Park.
I gotta say- as far as plan B's go- these views were pretty spectacular!
I've driven through this area multiple times in the 23+years we've called CO home but aside from a quick stop for gas or a potty break, I'd never really explored the area.
Leadville- filled with lots of things to see...from murals to trains
And of course...what this area is known for mines...
Both in town...
And not far from town...

HEARD
While the highlight of this area, was to hear the silence of the forest, we decided to play tourist one afternoon and took a ride on the Leadville Train.
Like other tourist-train rides, the conductor was a fountain of information-both on the history of the region (who knew that Leadville missed out on becoming the state capital by just 2 votes?), the vegetation (who knew that the reason the pine beetle didn't infect this area is because of the higher humidity?) and animal inhabitants (Supposedly the area is popular with deer, elk, and even an occasional mountain lion has been spotted on the route).

Like our usual luck on such tourist adventures, we spotted nada in terms of animals, but we left very impressed with how hearty one had to be to live in Leadville back in the day.
And yes...we followed the suggestion to physically distance ourselves..
Oh wait?  You mean it doesn't apply to spouses?  Gee- didn't know that (giggle giggle)
DID
In addition to exploring Leadville- we did a few other things during this first stretch of Summer Vacation

We worked on our selfie skills-

At least for me- it remains a work in progress
Ahh...much better when you use the technology-
like a timer on a camera
I played a little bit  at the shore....
Because its clearly too chilly at both Turquoise Lake
and
Clinton Gulch to even consider dipping one's toe in the water..

We enjoyed playing King of the Hill..
For that little blob of white is our unit..
Ah, much better...we had the cul de sac all to ourselves...
Highly recommend Wupperman Campground in Lake City...
Lucky #9....for $15/night!
I went for a ride with the Mr...
where the view from the tub is pretty spectacular...
I caught up with the locals at the gas station..
and spied on the neighbor down the hill from our camp..
Moosey was rather shy and decided to stay 600 feet from us
instead of the suggested 6 ...

And as my time in the mountains came a to a quicker than planned end
(the joys of an HMO-I had to return to  home base on Wednesday for some lab work)
I raised my glass and gave thanks..
That we are blessed to spend time in a place as beautiful and peaceful as this

Until next time...

Summer of Fun-Week 1

Hooray- we made it through SY19-20.   The ending was certainly not anything I would have ever predicted.  So, here I sit on the first day of summer vacation-already dreaming of returning to school in August.   Maybe that's because we've been working from home for 9 weeks already.

Oh well- time to dust off my summer series of Saw-Heard-Did...a weekly review that I started 2 summer ago.
SAW
Prior to March, the plan was for us to load up the RV this past Saturday and start heading north to explore the Canadian Rockies.   Reservations were made, routes were being plotted- but all those ideas came to a crashing halt with the pandemic.   We were 90% sure our plans would be interrupted and this week we saw that hunch confirmed.   The border remains closed through the middle of June, the national parks we hoped to explore remain closed to camping and the provincial parks in British Columbia are limiting visitors to just those who live in BC.  Three sure signs that Canada-2020 is now officially cancelled!

Fortunately for us, we have plenty of mountains and trails to explore right here in our beautiful state.   So, that's the plan for our summer- stay local and explore places we've not been before (while still being mindful of the value that comes with physical distancing).

HEARD
Thing 2-moves home!
Hearing that little voice growing to a roar all of us could no longer ignore- it just doesn't make solid financial sense to maintain two households in this area (our house in the 'burbs and his apartment downtown, close to campus).     His university is still unsure what Fall semester will look like in terms of online vs. in person learning.   Toss in that he's lined up a summer job- with his employer being closer to our house than downtown- well, we all agree it was time to head back home.

But first we had to do a little re-shuffling of the household space  and room assignments.
The kid gets what was my craft room-and I've moved into the front bedroom-and rebranded my space THE HEN DEN.   I'm using this time to reflect on what to keep vs. what has served its purpose and it is time for me to let it go.   While we both still have piles to sort through, I'd say we are both well on our way to Decluttering V.2020.

DID
Still not much "doing" going on these days.  Yes, the governor continues to lessen the restrictions-but I'll be honest, neither Hubby nor I are eager to be in that first wave to test the waters (well, with the exception of testing some of the national forest campgrounds that we hope will open up later this week).

I helped return student supplies last week and was so impressed to watch my District's food distribution in place.  The staff and the families had such hearts of gratitude.   And, they even shared some of the extras with us- Talk about a Happy Thing 1 when I came home with this giant bag of fries!

I am participating in a 4 week webinar hosted by Oprah.   Yeah, I know-she has a certain reputation, but I have to say, the older both of us get...I find she delivers her messages in a softer tone-reminding me that Today-I am healthy, I am well-and I am OK.   My mind has struggled to sort through the "what next" and "when will this be over" mindset- so this free webinar has been a great thing for me to do as I wait for those answers to become clear.
The summer to-do list looks very different than years past.   But that's ok- I am looking forward to exploring some hidden corners of my state, playing in the Hen Den- and hopefully-coming up with some more Pinterest-WINS like this one I did for our exiting students from work.
Until next time....

COVID Crisis Weeks 4-5-6-7-8.5

Time continues to fly and drag all at the same time as we  remain either at home or close-to-home depending on who's mandate you may be following.   So much for routine blog updates- but let's see if I can refresh my memory on what's happened in the past month
SAW-HEARD-DID
SAW:   We've watched the number of cases grow exponentially, and yet fortunately, some of the data suggests that the curve has started to flatten-with fewer cases requiring hospitalizations and even death.   More cases, but at a rate that the health care system can keep pace with.   That is the goal of the stay-at-home measures.   I personally have found it is best if I minimize the watching of the news, some things I can't avoid hearing through my weekly state and district level health briefings.

Moving off from the worrisome news, let's talk happy sightings...
Well- 2 of my favorite AZ snow-birders made their appearance in CO.
First to return to the nest was Hubby- who spent the month of March and first week of April enjoying the solitude of the southwest- Arizona and New Mexico.    I believe he spent close to 60 days in the desert- split between January, March and part of April (February was spent here in CO-with home renovation projects and jury duty)
Then, later in the month, my dad stopped by on his road trip back to WI, having spent his winter season in Sun City AZ.

It was nice to see both doing well- and yes, encourages me that once we get the Things to fly the nest, I too may be able to join the snow-bird trend that looks more appealing with each passing year.   And of course, while Grandpa was here-we had to pause those 6 ft. apart warnings and let the Things snuggle up against Grandpa and his belly!  :)

HEARD:   It has been a little less quiet these days- as my days are filled with at least one zoom meeting- some days one too many.   It feels like I go to more meetings now than I did in a traditional work setting.    Professional growth meetings, team meetings, planning meetings and briefings- way too much to keep track...grateful for Google Calendars that let me know where I am supposed to be and on what platform.
One thing I have heard over and over is the need to take care of ourselves during this time of uncertainty so what did I DO in the name of Self Care?!
DID:    All in the name of self care
Connected with the college kid...
Stalked my co-worker...
As I was craving a hearty dose of her infectious laugh...
Crafted a bit...thank-you Pinterest for the inspiration..
Walked a lot...trying to work my way through an epic read for our book club...

Sought the solitude of the country...and dreamed of retirement with land of our own...
With this handsome fella as my guide
Paused to smell the flowers- both outside
And inside...

And mostly- I continue to  remind myself on a daily basis how much truth is in this sentiment!

Until next time- do what you can, enjoy what is right there in your path-and try not to worry about all the rest of the stuff that gets in the way of joy...

COVID Crisis Weeks 1,2 & 3

I suppose one could say "time flies when we are having fun?"
Crazy Yard art-Cudahy WI March 2020
I went to bed last night thinking- "I should probably blog about the first couple of weeks of this crisis."   So, this morning, as I counted the weeks, I  realized instead of 2 weeks, we have now got 3 weeks were the  daily plan has involved staying close to home, first by recommendation, and now by governor's mandate.

I've struggled with how to journal during this time.   At times, it feels like we are all living the "real life" experience of Bill Murray in Groundhog day- same stuff, different day.

But yet, if I don't pause and reflect, will this time just all blur into one big blob of a "that time we all stayed home in order to stay well?"  I suspect even with a blog (or 2) updates- that blur will occur, but at least for today-I"m going to try and pause and take note of all the good that is occurring while we wait for the storm to pass.
SAW-HEARD-DID
SAW:  In these days of staying home, I feel like seeing really means watching- and for sure Thing 1 and I have watched a lot of TV- be it binge watching a series to watching a movie.   And just when I thought we had too many choices, the industry responded by providing free access to even more streaming services like Acorn TV (British programming), Showtime and Starz.   Oh my- so many choices.

Some of our favorites have included The Ladies in Black (Amazon Prime)- which is an Australian ensemble piece set in 1959 at a department store.   Charming and tender as the various characters navigate their way through the changing times.   We've also enjoyed Good Girls (Netflix and NBC for current season) and just last night we watched Unorthodox on Netflix.

We are enjoying exploring Acorn TV and caught a few episodes of a quirky mystery called Agatha Raisin- but after a few episodes we agreed it was a bit too sweet for even our very sweet tooth when it comes to movies.  I think I need to do a bit more research on what to watch on Acorn.

I've also been seeing a lot of my friends-granted it's almost exclusively  through video chat-but hey, it really has helped to see, laugh and connect with those who play an important part in my sanity.

Last Sunday- while on my walk-I was super excited to see my friend and her family on their walk.  Unfortunately, we couldn't walk and talk like we did pre-quarantine- but it was reassuring to give a quick shout out across the street and just make that human-to-human connection.

HEARD:   The echo of silence?   This house of 1800 sq. feet sure gets quiet with just myself and Thing 1.

Thing 2 has decided to stay downtown in his apartment.  It isn't connected with the university, so we are still paying rent- and he has a part-time job as a nursing assistant that is only a few blocks from his apartment.

Doesn't really make sense for him to come home.  I did make one trip downtown with critical supplies- toilet paper and ramen- two items that at the time were difficult to locate in the grocery stores near him.   But even with that "home delivery" we kept our visit brief and limited our contact (he's working with highly vulnerable population and yet given his youth, likely would fit in the category of mild-to-moderate amount of illness if he does catch it).

Hubby remains out in the desert- and no- I don't feel he needs to head home to keep us company.  I'm very happy that he is able to continue to do his thing and stay in compliance with orders to socially distance.   And well, have you seen his pictures?   Yeah- way better views than the 4 walls of House of Chang  Sloth Manor.

DID-   When the crisis all started to unfold, the first thing area school districts did was to either start or extend Spring Breaks.   This extension meant we were all sent home.  Week 1 was our previously planned Spring Break- and with a big camping adventure planned for Summer 2020 (now in limbo as to whether we will proceed with our plans), I had a pretty open calendar.   From an emotional standpoint- it was nice not to have cancel any planned trip- like a few of my friends from work found themselves doing.

It became apparent rather quickly that I needed to set up a routine-if just for the sake of my sanity and my waistline.
Lots of memes out there with messages about the self-care part of isolation.  This one really spoke the loudest to me.

I started to set my alarm, shower, and tackle some projects- you know those ones where you think "some day I'll work on"...well, some day has arrived and so while we watched movies, Thing 1 helped me sort-sift-and pitch tubs of lego parts.

I dug out a needlepoint project that has sat by my reading chair for several years and finished up the last little bits.   From there, I started and finished a 2nd project.

This past week- we resumed working and my week was busy as I learned how to be a school nurse while working from home.   What does that look like?  Lots of meeting, lots of "digital clean up" of outdated forms and files and just reaching out to our students to assist with any health needs they may have.

I did help out my building team with tech distribution- and it was interesting to watch the process unfold.  I felt a bit like an escapee- being out, interacting with others-while gloved-masked-and maintaining social distance.   As soon as the event was over, I scurried back to the comforts of home.

It remains to be seen how long this quarantine will remain in effect.   My nurse brain says probably later in April, we will see some lifting of restrictions.   I worry, though, that a 2nd wave will come crashing in, as all of us who have been in  a little protective bubble start to interact with others.   But, as have told myself many times through the years.. today's plate is full enough, no use in putting tomorrow's worry on it as well.

Until then...take a walk, enjoy the sunshine, and just remember to always wash your hands!
