Gratitude: 7-8-9: Attire, Friendship, Home

This weekend I took a little road trip to attend the state conference for school nurses.
It was fun to get away from the routine of my daily life
and being able to spend it learning a thing along the way, just made things all that better.

Completing a challenge on the road proved a little more challenging but here it goes...

Day 7:  Attire
Day 8:  Friendship
*I enjoyed a lovely dinner Saturday night with my forever friend, V.  She happens to live just down the road from where my conference was being held.

We met in college and had a shared experience of losing our moms to cancer soon after we each graduated.   That alone had the makings to cement our friendship.   Along the way we've waxed and waned in how often we spend time together (jobs and family responsibilities sometimes result in friends drifting apart just given the time constraints of our every day life).  Despite how long it has been since I've seen her,  I know that V. and her unconditional love and support are always just a phone call away.
Day 9:   Home*
"What I love most about my home is who I share it with"  (author unknown)

After a few days away, it was indeed so sweet to return to the old homestead

Day 6: Details

Plainly stated, a simple truth

Gratitude Day 5: Inspiration

Inspiration:   The decisions being made by this young lady has made national news.   You see, Brittany Maynard was given a terminal diagnosis of brain cancer.   With treatment options being exhausted, she made the very difficult and personal decision to relocate to an area that allows for physician assisted suicide.   She has also decided to make her actions public, creating a media sensation.

I personally draw inspiration from her acts of courage and her willingness to take this traditionally taboo subject and make it public.   I am hopeful that some day, hopefully during my lifetime, that the choice and decision she made becomes an accepted practice for those that believe this is the right course for their own situation.

Rest in Peace Brittany.   You were indeed an inspiration to many!

Gratitude Day 4: Wisdom

*I really need to remember this...sometimes I get stuck on having the last word, and a wise woman knows when it is time to let it go and move on.

Gratitude Day 3: Dream

Dream

Walt Disney....famous for many things
but since today's gratitude word is dream...
this one pops into my head:
All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them

I am grateful for my parents who raised my sister and I pursue our dreams...
even if they themselves didn't quite understand our choices.

Gratitude Day 2: Laugh

Laugh

It has been said that a good laugh brings sunshine in a home.

How very grateful I am for these two rays of sunshine in my house.   Ok, I admit, at 17 and 15, there are days when their antics bring more tears than laughter...
but overall, they are indeed the light and laughter of our home!

Gratitude Day 1: Beauty

November 1st:   you know what that means, right?   Time for some gratitudes to start flying around on the internet.

Throughout the years, this challenge has waxed and waned in popularity and practice.   Regardless of the facebook/twitter trends, I stay true to my original intent of pausing at this time of year to reflect on the many blessings in my life.  30 days of Gratitude, starting November 1st.

Why do I remain so loyal and committed to this practice?   I'm not sure:   sure I like routine-and-predictable (yes, I am a creature of habit) but I also can easily become distracted and fall into lazy habits (Case in Point:   a blog that gets updated once a month, if even that).

No, I think the reason that I return to this practice year after year is the comfort it gives me.   A way to slow down, reflect on the little things, and set aside a sliver of time each day to reflect on a gratitude or two.

But, I admit, it is hard not to sound like a broken record year after year.   I've always "winged it", not following any of the countless "lists" out there aimed at helping participants guide their gratitudes.   This year, I'm taking ideas from those listed on this web site.   I figure, no sense in re-inventing the wheel, nor do I feel like I've got it in my to be flying solo for 30 days.  It should be interesting to see how I fare with having some prompts to guide my gratitudes this year.

Day 1:   Beauty

Yeah, aren't we a trio of hotties?
Yeah, you know there is more I have to say on this topic...

I recently stumbled across a new quote.   Ok, new to me.

And this evening, I am reflecting and grateful for the beauty of friendships.   In particular, I am grateful for those beautiful friendships that form out of a cloudy situation, and yet have brought so much laughter and light to my life.

The two ladies I am enjoying tea with are members of what we call Team Judy.   Yeah, Judy had friends besides me (I know, hard to imagine, giggle giggle).
 Judy and Patty
Judy and Donna
We knew of each other, but our social circles didn't intersect all that often.
Until Judy got sick.   That changed everything.

Since Judy passed away, we'd gather occasionally.   Dinner, drinks, even a wedding or two.  Today, we met up enjoying one of Judy's favorite past times, having tea.

What a beautiful day it turned out to be:   a chance to catch up, laugh a little and enjoy some very beautiful treats at the Brown Palace Hotel.

Thank you Donna and Patty for the beautiful friendship we have enjoyed these past few years.    Looking forward to many more beautiful celebrations shared together.
PS:   one of us needs longer arms, we aren't so great at these "groupies" with our short arms

Adventures in Babysitting:

Thing One as a papa?
HOPEFULLY the real deal is a good decade away, but thanks to a child development class he is taking this semester, we had a sneak peek of what it means to be a parent.

None of this decorate an egg or carry around a flower sack.   Nope, this Baby Thing had a computer chip in it, and was programmed to make various noises throughout the weekend.   You had to feed him, burp him, rock him, change him and hold his neck just so.   Basically a decoder ring beeped if you did the right task.   If not, the baby kept fussing until you met his demands, needs.

We all got into the act....which was for the most part entertaining and educational.
Just the same by weekend's end, Thing One announced
"I'm naming him HIPPO because he eats constantly
Final Grade:   79%, apparently we didn't support his neck correctly and losing that damn  precious decoder thingie in the middle of the second night cost us  Thing One some points.

Reflections

On Friday, I attended a workshop and one of the people presenting talked about the professional benefits of a reflection journal.  I thought "hey, I've been doing that for years on my blog".   Sure, here I reflect on a little bit of everything from work to family, trying to focus on the positive side of things.    And then, before I got too smug in thinking "oh, I do that", I realized it had been a little too long since I sat down and reflected or blogged...so here it goes...

For starters, last month I reflected on goodbyes, and I will start out this entry with yet another goodbye.   This one clearly falls in  the category of an unexpected goodbye.
Hubby and I were waiting to hear from our friend, Bobskoots.   He and his wife were due to arrive at our house for a visit last week.   I was really excited to meet Yvonne, having heard so much about her through the years that we've been friends with Bob.

On our trip up to the mountains, Hubby and I reflected  that it had been a couple weeks since we'd heard from Bob.   He's one very connected internet guy so to go almost 2 weeks without a peep from him, seemed very odd.  Yes, we started to assume the worst, but really didn't let our minds wander in that direction for too long.   Nah, nothing bad could have happened.  Maybe he had simply encountered mechanical delays or technical difficulties?

On Monday, we learned the reason for his radio silence.   While on an epic US road trip with his wife, Bob died of a an apparent heart attack while in Nashville.      Our heartfelt sympathies go out to his wife Yvonne and his two adult children.

Yes, Bob died living his life, doing the things he enjoyed and from that we can draw comfort.   Yet, such an unsettling reminder for us all that we never know when our time is up and whether we will have an opportunity to say a final goodbye to those who hold a special place in our lives.

Bob did indeed hold a special place in many moto-bloggers hearts.   He inspired many of the quieter types to get out there and meet and ride with each other in real time. Step away from the computer and get out and visit with one another.

Thank you Bob for sharing so much of yourself with all of us.    You will be missed for sure!
*Don't they look like they are related by more than just a love of motorcycles?

Next up in a long winded reflection post, is noting how much things change in that blink of an eye...

Seems it was just yesterday when these cuties were parade spectators....
And now look who is in the Homecoming parade...

Thing Two has dove in head first into all things High School....from Friday Night football games to joining the lacrosse team.   He's even sustained his first concussion (Being a non-sport family, we failed to remind him of the dangers associated with running from the grass to the concrete while wearing cleats.   Face Plant time!)

One of the cardinal signs of a concussion:   emotional changes.
this one can best be described as punch drunk....talk about the selfie-crazed teens!

And now, on to happier reflections....

When the babysitter is this cute as an awkward pre-teen (12), you just know she's going to make
A very beautiful bride...

And with sisters as tight as these three have always been,
It's a given that they will be beaming all afternoon...

And if this guy can have fun with just some veggies...
His day to really shine was as Father of The Bride

Eric and his mama, Big V, proud grandma of the bride

And while I know first hand how much this wonderful lady loved a wedding...

Judy as our Nanny at Ling and Carlos's wedding circa 2002

Her daughter surely learned from the best...

And put together one heck of a great wedding...

Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Morris!

Thanks for letting us share in your wonderful day!

Goodbyes

Yesterday seemed to be all about goodbyes.

There are the goodbyes we know must happen.  Such was the case for Mrs. D, a neighbor friend who has dedicated her summer to saying goodbye to her childhood home and helping her mom, the wonderful Mrs. G, move on to a living arrangement that can better meet her memory needs.    They close on Monday, so yesterday was the last trip to the family home.
Caitlin and her grandma, circa 2009
There are the goodbyes we know are coming but we just don't know when.   .
Such was the case for my dear friend, Mrs. Z.     Her sister passed away yesterday morning.   Oh sure, we knew it was coming as her sister has struggled with some demons for most of her life.   But you are never fully prepared for when the end arrives.   You may know it's coming, but when it happens, well, there goes that hope.   That little glimmer of hope that maybe one day your loved one realizes that sobriety was a healthier and better decision.     Mrs. Z, your sister is no longer hurting, and know that your sister wives are here for you...ready to offer a hug, a good laugh, or even a trip to Village Inn, diets be damned!

And finally there is the unthinkable goodbye.   When you lose a child.   Yesterday, a family I have met through an online community said their final goodbyes to their 6 year old daughter.    Katie  just had more illness than modern medicine and prayer could fix.   How do you move forward from this devastating loss?   I do not know, but her family has amazed me through the years with their gracious ways and I have no doubt they will indeed move forward.   But for now, prayers for the Murphy family is all I can offer.

But not all goodbyes are about tears of sadness.   Yesterday was our neighborhood's annual party-in-the-park.   Sort of a good-bye to summer, complete with live band, catered BBQ, bounce houses galore, and all your friends and neighbors out enjoying one last summer evening before we say goodbye to the lazy days of summer.   School starts here tomorrow....so while the calendar tells  us we've still got a month or so left of summer, in our hearts, we know that Summer 2014 is pretty much all wrapped up.

And while it seemed a little bit wrong and selfish to be having a good time with friends while others were having one helluva bad day, I also know that is what we need to do....creating those memorable moments, so that when it is time to say a goodbye of a sadder note, we can draw comfort from those many happy less painful times.

For my 3 friends that I dedicate this post to, my family and I send you our heartfelt sympathies...hoping you draw comfort from the loving support of those of us who love you dearly!
